What is your climate call to action?  Make sure your voice gets heard amidst the discussion and debate in the lead up to COP26 by joining one of our eco placard-making workshops.

Using recycled and repurposed materials, these workshops will be facilitated by Mercedes Balle, a visual artist and tutor at Art Academy London.

Pop in during your lunchbreak with colleagues or come along with your family to get hands on and share your ideas on how we can make Bankside a low carbon neighbourhood.

The placards you make will join those created by students at Haberdashers’ Borough Academy as part of our week-long exhibition exploring the impact of climate change on our neighbourhood.

We’ll be running this workshop as two sessions: 12m-1pm and 1pm-2pm. Sign up now or drop in on the day.

Mercedes Balle is a visual artist based in London. Mercedes reuses building materials to create art about nature. She sees the layers and layers of constructions in the cities as the biggest disconnection between the landscape and her. Balle’s practice moves through different media as she transforms again and again the building materials she gathers, trying to squeeze all their possibilities. By doing so, she wants to get involved in the circular economy with the art and question the problems of our economy in relation to the environment.

Her work has been exhibited numerous times in Spain and the UK. In 2020 Mercedes was a finalist at Art Jove competition and showed at Casal Solleric in Majorca. In 2020 Balle was also nominated semifinalist at LSM Awards, and is showing until 2021 at Liberty’s offices in the Walkie Talkie building in London for that nomination. She is currently showing at Weil Studio in Majorca, Euston University Hospital in London and tutors at Art Academy London.

Even though COVID restrictions have been lifted we ask that anyone feeling unwell, or displaying Covid symptoms do not attend on the day. It is also important that we continue to respect the personal boundaries and wishes of others with regards to personal space, mask wearing, and physical contact.

This event is part of Bankside 2025: pioneering a low carbon neighbourhood, a programme of activity taking place from 25-29 October 2021 at a converted Southwark Street railway arch. Organised by Better Bankside and open to the public in the run up to COP26, the arch will transform into a hub for climate action, mobilising active participation from businesses and individuals from across Bankside and London.
